For these easy, DIY crafts, you'll just need a few supplies and a little imagination!
1. Pirate Hats
What's a pirate without their iconic tricorn hat? Fortunately, it's not too hard to make one with just a few materials.
Supplies
- Construction paper or kraft paper
- Scissors (to cut the paper to size)
- Markers
Directions
- Lay the construction paper or kraft paper out in front of you. (If you have construction paper, you may need to tape a few pieces together. It should measure about 24 inches.)
- Fold the paper in half to make a square. Turn the paper so that the folded side is at the top.
- Fold the top two corners inward toward the center by making triangles.
- Take the bottom edge and fold upward, overlapping the triangle folds.
- Repeat on the other side.
- Let your little pirate decorate the hat with markers to make it unique.
2. Treasure Maps
A treasure map is essential for a pirate's treasure hunt. Here is everything you'll need to make your own.
Supplies
- Cardstock
- Pen or marker
- Glue stick
- Watercolor paints
- Pencil
Directions:
- Draw a pirate map on the cardstock.
- Outline the map with a marker.
- Use watercolor paints to add texture and color to the map.
- Let the paint dry and then add details to the map with a pencil.
- Glue the map onto another piece of cardstock for added stability and let it dry.
3. Pirate Eyepatches
Every pirate needs an eyepatch for a truly authentic look. Get started with a few supplies, and then decorate to your heart's content.
Supplies
- Felt
- Ribbon
- Hot glue
- Tape
- Scissors
- Markers
- Stickers
Directions
- Cut out a piece of ribbon long enough to fit around your head.
- Cut a piece of felt wide enough to fit over your eyes.
- Secure the ends of the ribbon to the felt eyepatch with glue or tape.
- Let the glue dry and then decorate the felt eyepatch with stickers or markers.
4. Pirate Telescopes
For a classic pirate touch, make a seaworthy spyglass out of cardboard. This simple craft is perfect for young pirates — just be sure to have supervision when cutting the cardboard.
Supplies
- 3 cardboard toilet paper tubes
- Paint
- Scissors
- Markers
- Tape
- Stickers
Directions
- Paint the cardboard tubes and let them dry. Use your imagination here! They can be any color you'd like.
- Cut slits down two of the cardboard tubes. You'll use these to create the extended layers of the telescope.
- Leave one cardboard tube as is. This is the broadest part of your telescope!
- Once the paint has dried, take one of the cut tubes and wrap it until it fits inside the solid tube by overlapping the edges and securing it with tape. Make it snug!
- Repeat this process by fitting the last tube inside the tube from Step 4.
- Decorate the telescope with markers and stickers however you'd like! Land ahoy!
5. Pirate Flags
What's a pirate ship without a flag? Don't feel like you have to stick to the tried and true Jolly Roger. Feel free to get creative with your pirate flags.
Supplies
- The fabric of your choice
- Ribbon
- Glue
- Scissors
- Markers
- Stickers
Directions
- Cut out a rectangle from the fabric — this will become your flag.
- Use the ribbon, markers, and stickers to design your pirate flag.
- Hang the flag up in your playroom for the perfect pirate touch!
